This Environmental and Social Policy & Procedures (ESPP) statement for India's largest utility, the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, comprises four sections elaborating environmental and social policy; containing legal enactments, regulations, and requirements; outlining the environmental and social assessment and management framework; and detailing the organizational support required to operationalize this ESPP. Potential environmental impacts and mitigation measures follow: Displaced persons and establishments losing land, structures, livelihood, and/or access to common resources and facilities will be compensated by resettlement, cash payments, or equivalent access to services. Because of the perceived risk of cancer due to EMF (low-level electromagnetic radiation) emanating from power transmission lines, POWERGRID will keep itself informed of the latest research developments in this field. Other potential mitigations are to reduce the loss of wild lands by carefully selecting rights of way; minimize damage to vegetation, including deforestation, and habitat fragmentation by using hand clearing, transporting tower material by headloads into forests, and regenerating and cultivating vegetation; avoid using PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyl) in electrical equipment to prevent contamination; reduce avian hazards by steering clear of nesting sites and crucial habitats, and equipping towers with bird guards; and avoid aircraft hazards by using markers and night lights.
