South Sudan - Emergency Food and Nutrition Security Project : Environmental Assessment : Environmental and Social Management Plan (Inglês)

The development objectives of Emergency Food and Nutrition Security Project are: (a) to provide food and nutrition support for the protection of lives and human capital of eligible beneficiaries; and (b) to help farmers re-engage in agricultural production in selected drought-affected areas in South Sudan. Some of the negative impacts include: (i) loss of vegetation cover; (ii) increased soil erosion and sedimentation; (iii) soil nutrient loss; (iv) pollution from agro-processing; (v) loss of vegetation cover, impaired catchment function; (vi) reduced agro- biodiversity value; (vii) irreparable damage to and or loss of physical cultural resources; (viii) food insecurity at house hold level and Poverty; (ix) poor adoption of agriculture technology; (x) blockage of pipes or drainage channels; (xi) loss of man hours due injuries and infections caused by farm work; and (xii) sharing of tasks and failure to separate women roles from men’s tasks. Some of the mitigation measures include: (i) conversion of land to agriculture; (ii) water catchments protection; (iii) slashing, digging and desilting drainage channels; (iv) conflict for food or water other resources between livestock, wildlife and humans; (v) planting deep rooted trees Agro forestry practices; (vi) use recommended organic and inorganic fertilizers for soil improvement; (viii) subsidy on farm inputs by the government; (ix) gender mainstreaming through training; (x) no dumping in wetland; (xi) enforce social norms; and (xii) adherence to ethical code of conduct and sensitization.
