China - Changjiang/Pearl River Watershed Rehabilitation Project : environmental and social assessment (Vol. 5) : Environment impact assessment (Chinês,Inglês)

This is an environmental and social assessment for the Chiangjiang/ Pearl River Watershed rehabilitation Project for China, which protects the environment and improves people's livelihoods in poor and highly degraded watersheds of the Changjiang and Pearl River Basins by promoting an integrated and replicable model of sustainable rural development. The report anticipates social and environmental risks and discusses measures to mitigate them. Among the described measures are the following: To protect slopes, construct terracing works together with other works, such as on-farm works; integrate terracing with the development of cash trees and orchards; and fence earth-banked terraces with cash trees and orchards such as Chinese prickly ash, Cape jasmine and tea trees. Consider and suit local conditions when building water infrastructure projects. Select cash trees and orchards suitable to local conditions, that is, in accord with different soil, climatic and environmental conditions in the project counties. Promote the use of biogas to encourage soil and water conservation. To avoid risks arising from integrated pest management, increase public environmental awareness, especially the farmers' knowledge, and build economic incentives to control pesticide use; protect natural enemies of pests and enhance biodiversity conservation; Local water and soil erosion will be managed, environmental deterioration be tackled and poverty be rooted out from resource and environmental perspectives. The Project doesn't involve demolition or migration or ecological resettlement and only involves minor land acquisition and temporary land occupation. Attention should be paid to protecting the traditional cultures and productive and social customs of ethnic minorities during project planning and implementation to ensure that the inheritance and protection of ethnic minorities' traditional cultures are not adversely impacted.
