Bangladesh - First Phase of the Coastal Embankment Improvement Project : resettlement plan : Resettlement action plan (English)

The objective of the First Phase of the Coastal Embankment Improvement Project for Bangladesh is to increase the resilience of coastal population to natural disasters and climate change. Some of the negative impacts and the mitigation measures include: a) slope protection will be provided for existing sections vulnerable to immediate erosion avoiding retirement and acquisition of additional land; b) embankment sections through villages, markets and lands of higher elevation have been designed severally to avoid displacement; c) extensive consultations have been conducted with the affected communities and people living along the embankment alignments to consider their views and incorporate them in the polder design, as far as possible; d) the affected squatters on the existing embankment slopes will be notified and relocated only when the civil works will be carried out in those sections; e) efforts will be made to plan the construction works in such a way that the fishing activities of the project affected persons (PAPs) as well as school final examinations are minimally affected; f) in sections with some constraints of construction of embankment in full section, retaining wall will be constructed to avoid displacement of households and shops; and g) the crest level by sections and polders will be decided through technical analysis of recurring events of floods and cyclonic storms. The crest level was confirmed in the Project Steering Committee (PSC) meeting after review of the technical reasoning.
