Mozambique - Smallholder Irrigated Agriculture and Market Access Project : environmental assessment : Environmental and social management framework (Inglês)

The development objective of the Smallholder Irrigated Agriculture and Market Access Project for Mozambique is to improve smallholder agriculture productivity and market access in the project areas developed with irrigation and provide immediate and effective response to an eligible crisis or emergency. Negative impacts are: (1) air emission; (2) noise; (3) solid and liquid wastes; (4) low water quality and quantity; (5) impacts on health and safety; (6) reduction of arable and pastoral land; and (7) influx of external workers. Mitigation measures include: (1) covering any excavated dusty materials or stockpile of dusty materials entirely by impervious sheeting; (2) utilizing and properly maintaining silencers or mufflers that reduce vibration on construction equipment during construction works; (3) care should be taken to ensure the absence of contaminated fill material and the adequacy of the physical and chemical properties of such material to limit potential adverse impacts on water and soil and ensure project safety; (4) surface run-off from the construction site should be directed into storm drains through adequately designed sand and silt removal facilities such as sand traps, silt traps, and sediment basins; (5) provision of training about the fundamentals of occupational health and safety procedures; (6) utilize alternative designs to reduce land and row width requirements and minimize land use impact; and (7) supply and enforce wearing protective equipment (helmets, boots, dress, gloves, masks, goggles, etc.) by workers.
