Nepal Development Forum - economic update 2002 (Nepalês)

This economic update for Nepal examines the country's socioeconomic indicators, and poverty incidence, and, provides as well, a review of the recent economic developments (Section II), and the status of implementation of the reform program (Section III). Nepal is the twelfth poorest country in the World, and the poorest in South Asia, where despite per capita growth rates, averaging 2.2 percent per annum in the last two decades, poverty reduction has been slow. However, while this holds true, progress has been made in some aspects of human development in the 1990s: infant and maternal mortality was reduced; primary school enrollment increased; the gender gap in education was reduced; and, access to drinking water increased. During that period, the economy became more open with rapidly growing trade - especially exports - to both the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries, and India. However, and despite accelerated growth, this performance could not be sustained in the face of external economic shocks, and because of the absence of reforms, and internal political instability. Currently, economic growth has slowed down, and medium term prospects are bleak, aggravated by growing fiscal pressures, and diminished export markets. Thus, it is imperative for Nepal to accelerate the pace of reforms, for restoring security, maintaining fiscal and macroeconomic stability, increasing economic productivity and competitiveness, and, improving governance and public service delivery.
